Homemade Toothpaste

Last week I posted about uses for coconut oil, and homemade toothpaste is yet another great way to use coconut oil.  At first I was skeptical.  Homemade toothpaste, how would I even know if it was better?  I knew it would taste funny, be hard to dispense, and I would have to get yet another "I can't believe you are making another homemade product" look from my hubby.

Well let me tell you, I have never been more happy to be wrong.  The taste did take some getting used to, but now I like it, and the results are nothing short of amazing.  This takes homemade to a new level. I have been using for 2 weeks now and my teeth not only feel cleaner, but are actually whiter. So much so even hubby started using it. Update: my mom started using it too, she loves how much cleaner her teeth feel!

I tried putting it in a toothpaste tube, not the best idea.  It is very hard to push through, next time I will just put it in a small glass jar.

Here is the recipe I used.

Mix together in a small bowl.
3 TBS Baking Soda
3 TBS Coconut Oil
1 tsp Stevia (1 small packet)
10-30 drops of peppermint oil (could also use cinnamon)
2 tsp Glycerin (this is optional, I know it's a controversial ingredient)

That's it, how easy what that?  Have you've tried making something homemade lately?  I'd love to hear about it.  Every time I do, I'm amazed that I haven't made it before.

Update (May 07, 2012):  I just made a batch using equal parts Baking Soda and Coconut Oil, and I added a packet of Stevia.  Really like it just like this, we don't need the oil added for the taste or glycerin for texture.  I also went to the dentist last week and they said my teeth looked great.  Hardly any tarter build up and no cavities. After using homemade toothpaste for over a month now, I will never go back to store-bought again!
