Self control is a fruit of the spirit. A life rooted in Christ will bear this fruit.
I say sign me up! I really like to be in control. That's why I make lists and set goals. It gives me a direction and can bring clarity to my life. Plus it gives me the illusion of being in control.
I say illusion, because really I'm not in control - at all. This is not the self control that is a fruit. God is in control and He gives you a spirit in control.
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
A steadfast and willing spirit in you, this is self control fruit. Doesn't that sound good? That is so what I want, a steadfast and willing spirit! Wouldn't it be nice to not make out of control decisions? To always make clear, sober, thoughtful decisions?
Unfortunately I'm human. With my humanity there are limitations. Romans 7 describes my situation perfectly.
Romans 7: 21 & 25a
So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me...Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Will power and self control are not the same things. Christ helps you live in control. Through Him you can see clearly, the fog from life lifts. You can find freedom in Him.
Can I get an Amen? Living in Christ you are able to live a fuller life.
